Helen
Mary Jones is an Assembly Member for the Llanelli Constituency. Helen
Mary represented Plaid Cymru in Llanelli between May 1999 and May
2003. She lost her constituency seat in Llanelli by only 21 votes
in 2003, but regained the seat with a majority of 3,884 in May 2007.
Between 2003 & 2007 she represented the people of Mid and West
Wales in the National Assembly.
She was born in Colchester, Essex in 1960 and was
educated in Colchester County High School for Girls, Ysgol Uwchradd
Llanfair Caereinion and University College Wales, Aberystwyth.
Before her election, she worked as a special needs
teacher, then as a youth and community worker. She later worked as
the Deputy Director of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Wales.
She is the Shadow Minister for Health and Social Services in the National
Assembly.
She contested the 1992 general election in Islwyn
against the then leader of the Labour Party, Neil Kinnock, and the
1997 general election in Montgomeryshire.
She is a member of the Environment, Planning and
Countryside Committee, Equal Opportunity Committee and Voluntary Sector
Partnership Council. Her political interests include the environment,
the Welsh language, children's rights and social justice. She is currently
the Shadow Health and Social Services Minister.
Helen Mary learnt Welsh as an adult and is now a
fluent second language speaker. She also speaks English and basic
French.
She divides her time between her home in Trimsaran
and Cardiff. She lists her interests as including swimming, cooking
for friends and spending fun time with Catrin and Catrin's dog sky.
