I joined Plaid Cymru because I believe in Wales. There is such potential in our communities and so many talented committed people.

Our unique language and wealth of cultures survive and develop and grow. Our political culture comes from a proud tradition of commitment to justice, fairness and equality. The beauty and variety of our natural environment is second to none worldwide.

We are a small nation but I believe a very special one. When I came to live here as a teenager from south east England I knew I had come home.

It angers and saddens me to see that potential wasted, that language and those cultures struggle in the face of official neglect and ‘market forces’, that political culture cynically betrayed by Labour and that environment pillaged and degraded for gain.

It doesn’t have to be like this.

We have survived as a nation despite at best neglect and at worst hostility from Westminster governments, Labour and Tory. We have survived as communities despite decades of self serving lethargic Labour councils.

Now is our chance to do more than survive. From 2007 we can use the National Assembly for Wales with all its weaknesses, to immediately make real differences to people’s lives. We can transform the Assembly into a proper Parliament and use that Parliament as a platform to build the confidence of the people on the road to independence.

We need to inspire people with the vision of what we in Wales, as a free member of the European Union, could achieve for each other at home and to promote peace and justice in the wider world. We have a huge political job to do.

It promises to be an exciting journey.
